Intuition 101

“Intuition is seeing with the soul. “

– Dean Koontz

The inner voice.

A tiny whisper.

A gut feeling.

A deep knowing.

Our intuition is a wonderful ally to have in our day-to-day lives. It’s the gentle, subtle voice that pops up within the chaos of our “monkey mind” and lovingly guides us to what is right and what is true. Some people say it’s the voice of God, others say it’s our Higher Selves or our souls. Whatever we believe it is, it is real and it is incredibly powerful.

So what exactly is it?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, intuition is defined as:

the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning

Intuition, then, is the instantaneous understanding of something without any reason.

Intuition operates between the realms of the conscious and unconscious, within our subconscious. Because of this, it can be difficult to grasp and even more difficult to rationalize or come up with logical evidence for the intense sense or feeling we find ourselves experiencing. We live in a society that has tended to force the use of rationale or logic to make decisions and downplay or even demonize the use of intuition. Luckily, we’re moving into a world in which intuition is starting to be seen as a necessary aspect of decision-making when used side by side with logic.

Have you ever found yourself dwelling on a particular situation for days, not finding any solution no matter how hard you tried? And then maybe you decide to give up and go for a walk one evening and suddenly the answer shows up out of nowhere? I’m sure most of us have experienced this. This sudden realization is the work of our intuition being in harmony with our rational mind. Because intuition calls for a lack of conscious reasoning, as soon as we let go of the dwelling and going around in a mental circle, the answer has the space to come through. We gave ourselves the time to analyze the details and many aspects of the situation, took a breath, and let go for a bit so that our subconscious could work its magic and formulate that which serves us in the best way.

What about hunches or gut feelings? Have you ever sensed someone’s motives without even speaking a word to them? Have you ever felt how someone was feeling without them expressing it? Or just known that something was about to happen? Again, this is our intuition working. Everything is energy, including us. We are constantly picking up on the energetic transference going on around us and our intuition clues us in on the truth of the energy in our environment. As I said earlier, it guides us to what is right and true. It keeps us safe and on path with our truth and purpose, gently letting us know what is going on underneath the veil so that we may make decisions which serve us in the highest way.

It’s a subtle knowing without knowing. A feeling with no reason. A picture with no proof.

It just is.

We are all intuitive by nature. Like air, we cannot grasp our intuition but we know that it’s there, always. It never stops working, perceiving, or communicating with us, regardless if we’re listening or not.

If you were standing face to face with your soul, would you ignore it? Or would you be so intensely curious about what it had to show you or tell you?

I would assume the latter.

Our intuition has such powerful wisdom to share with us, and it’s up to us to listen and embrace it fully and completely. I liken it to an internal GPS system. We can always count on it to show us the best path to take in any given environment, provided we “put in” the right “address.” What I mean by that is when we hold our most pure and desired intentions in our hearts, our intuition will guide us to that which supports and encourages those intentions to be made manifest. It will guide us to or away from environments, people, or situations that will open space for them to be realized. Not only that, but it’s the one place we can always receive the highest quality and truest advice we could ever be blessed with – advice which fully aligns with and reflects our essence, our soul, our deepest self.

It will never lead us astray. It will never abandon us. It’s always there waiting for us to embrace it so that we may step into our path with courage, trust, and a deep sense of knowing that all is right and all is good. Because it is. Always. Especially so when we have the most loving and reliable side-kick known to man.

Our intuition knows us best. It knows what is important to us. It knows what we dream of and wish for. It knows who we are at the deepest, most profound level. For this reason, it’s imperative that we begin to acknowledge it for what it is – the embodiment of our soul.

Are you listening?

  1. This is a very good post and raises this very important topic of intuition. I think in my lifetime it has been seriously underrated. You are right that now it is getting the recognition it deserves. We need to tap back into that “gut” feeling that has helped us survive the millennia. Thank you.

  2. I’m sure intuition is as important as rationale! I’m not sure if I’m correctly following it, though I do take into account what I feel towards a decision before choosing one. 😀
